Starting Point: Garden State Parkway
Begin by taking Exit 117 on the Garden State Parkway. This exit lies near Matawan, south of New York City. After exiting, merge onto Route 36 South. Follow the signs for "Gateway National Recreation Area." Route 36 South

4. As you approach the ocean shore, look for a sign that reads "Sandy Hook / Gateway National Recreation Area Next Right." This sign will appear just before a drawbridge.
