Lake Ontario stretches to the horizon with an almost oceanic presence, its surface shifting from steel blue to glittering turquoise depending on the light. The beach is wide and sandy, backed by dune formations that rise and curl like natural fortresses, buffering the wind and giving the shoreline an intimate, sheltered quality despite the vastness of the water. Grasses and shrubs anchor the dunes, and the vegetation transitions into wilder, more diverse habitat as you move inland. Making this spot a favorite for birdwatchers, photographers, and anyone who simply wants to sit in a beautiful place and breathe. During spring, wildflowers bloom along the margins of the dunes. In fall, the surrounding foliage ignites in amber and gold, and the crowds thin to almost nothing. Access is via Southwick Beach State Park. A parking fee applies at the state park. The swimming hole itself is an unofficial area within the Lakeview WMA, reached by walking south from the park's beach. No lifeguards or services are present at the WMA.
