About Packers Falls

Tucked along the gentle curves of the Lamprey River near Durham, New Hampshire, Packers Falls is the kind of place that feels like a well-kept secret shared between locals and the occasional adventurous visitor. This unofficial, undeveloped swimming spot offers something increasingly rare in the modern world: a stretch of natural river where you can slip into cool, clear water without the crowds, the parking fees, or the whistles of a lifeguard. It's just you, the river, and the sound of water moving over ancient rock.

The Setting and Landscape

The Lamprey River here moves through a landscape that shifts beautifully with the seasons. In summer, the banks are thick with green canopy, dappling the water with shifting light and keeping the air noticeably cooler than in the open sun. Natural rock formations line the riverbed and shoreline, worn smooth by centuries of current, creating both the falls that give the site its name and a series of natural platforms where visitors love to pause, sun themselves, or simply watch the water below. Come autumn, the hillsides surrounding the river ignite in amber, crimson, and gold β€” a backdrop that transforms even a brief visit into something memorable. Spring brings wildflowers pushing through the understory, and the river runs fuller and faster with snowmelt. Even winter draws the occasional photographer, lured by the serene, frost-edged stillness of the falls in the cold quiet.

What Swimming Is Like

The Lamprey River at Packers Falls offers varied swimming depths, making it genuinely welcoming for a range of visitors. Families with younger children can find calmer, shallower sections along the edges, while stronger swimmers can explore deeper pools carved out by the falls themselves. The water carries that clean, slightly cool character typical of New Hampshire's inland rivers β€” refreshing rather than bracing in the heat of July and August, with summer bringing the warmest and most comfortable conditions for an extended swim. The natural rock formations add an element of exploration to the experience: there are edges to sit on, channels to drift through, and the gentle rush of the falls providing a constant, soothing soundtrack.
