Swimming Holes Near Me
Free GPS distance sort for natural places to swim near you — rivers, creeks, swimming lakes, springs, quarries, and waterfall pools. Filter free entry; we never store your location.
Location is used only in your browser to sort nearby results. We don’t store it.
This page is the free GPS map for swimming holes near you — natural rivers, creeks, swimming lakes, springs, quarries, and waterfall pools, not city pools. Tap Use My Location to sort 862+ documented spots by distance, then filter free, waterfall, or dog-friendly access, or open a city list when GPS is denied. Looking for quieter options? Start with our secret swimming holes guide. Every listing carries fees, access notes, and a last-updated date; confirm before you drive. Full inventory: U.S. swimming holes dataset.
How to find spots near you (3 steps)
- Use GPS or pick a city — sort 862+ spots by distance, or open a metro nearby list.
- Match the water you want — river, creek, lake, spring, waterfall, or quarry — then read fee and access notes.
- Verify before you go — check water level, posted rules, and land manager advisories the day of your trip.
Swim spots, water holes, creeks, and lakes near you
High-volume “near me” searches often mean a specific water type. Start with the national list, then a short guide if you need help choosing:
- All river swimming holes — rivers near me (GPS) · river swimming guide
- All swimming creeks — swimming creeks near me (GPS) · creek swimming guide
- All swimming lakes — swimming lakes near me (GPS) · lake swimming guide · closest lake to swim in · Colorado swim lakes
- All quarry swimming holes — quarries near me (GPS) · quarry swimming guide · is quarry swimming safe?
- Swimming hole road trips — regional shortlists with season tips when you want a multi-stop drive instead of a single GPS sort
- Waterfall swimming holes — waterfall swimming holes near me (GPS) · swimmable waterfalls guide
- Free swimming holes near me — free swimming holes guide
- Dog-friendly swimming holes near me — dog-friendly guide
- Secret / hidden swimming holes near me — quieter public access, not trespassing pins

How far is “near me”, realistically?
Most people searching for a swimming hole near them are willing to drive 30 to 60 minutes, and that is roughly the radius our city pages use. But the honest answer depends on where you live. In Vermont, West Virginia, or the North Carolina mountains you are rarely more than twenty minutes from swimmable water. In Phoenix, Dallas, or Chicago the nearest genuinely good spot is often a ninety-minute drive, and the closest pin on a map is frequently a no-swim reservoir rather than somewhere you can get in.
This is why distance sorting alone is not enough. A spot eight miles away that bans body contact is worse than one forty miles away with a real beach. Sort by distance first, then read the access and fee notes on each listing before you commit to the drive. Straight-line distance is also not drive time — mountain and forest-road access routinely doubles it.
Which water type should you look for?
“Swimming hole” covers seven quite different kinds of water, and picking the right one matters more than picking the closest one. Here is the short version:
| Water type | Choose it when | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| River | You want depth and room to actually swim | Current and flow — check the gauge, not the photo |
| Creek | You want shade, cold water, and fewer people | Flash flooding, and low water by late August |
| Waterfall | You want the plunge pool and the photo | Slick rock above drops, and swimming bans |
| Lake | You want the warmest water and a real beach | Algae blooms and no-swim reservoir rules |
| Spring | You want clarity and a constant temperature | Keep your head up; use a nose clip |
| Quarry | You want clear, deep water | Private property, and no shallow exit |
| Coastal | You want salt water without open surf | Tides, rip currents, post-rain closures |
Tap a type above for the national list, or add it as a filter to your GPS results: creeks near me, swimming lakes near me, rivers near me, quarries near me, springs near me.
When the water is actually swimmable where you are
Air temperature is a bad predictor of whether you will enjoy getting in. Water lags the season by weeks, and the gap between regions is large enough that national advice is useless. These are the windows we use when writing our state guides:
| Region | Usable window | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Northeast & Upper Midwest ME, NH, VT, MA, NY, MI, MN, WI | Mid-June to early September | Granite and ledge pools that stay in the low 60s°F all summer. Shallow ponds warm first; rivers never really do. |
| Mid-Atlantic & Appalachians PA, NJ, MD, VA, WV, OH, KY | Late May to September | The longest usable window in the north. Mountain creeks lag the valleys by about three weeks. |
| Southeast NC, SC, GA, TN, AL, AR | May to September | Blue Ridge creeks hold 55-65°F even in August, while Piedmont and lowland rivers push into the high 70s°F. |
| Gulf & Florida FL, LA, MS, TX | April to October, and year round at the springs | Florida springs hold about 72°F every day of the year. Everything else is bath-warm by July. |
| Mountain West CO, MT, WY, ID, UT | July to August, hot springs year round | Snowmelt keeps rivers dangerous into July. Hot springs are the reliable option nine months a year. |
| Southwest AZ, NM, NV | April to October | Canyon creeks run cold and clear under 100°F air. Monsoon flash flooding from July to September is the real constraint. |
| Pacific Northwest & California WA, OR, CA | Late June to September | The clearest water is the coldest. Cascade and Sierra rivers cause cold-water-shock incidents on the hottest weekends of the year. |
| Plains & Heartland KS, NE, ND, SD, OK, IA, MO, IL, IN | June to early September | Reservoir beaches carry most of the swimming, so blue-green algae advisories matter more here than current does. |
Five checks before you get in
- Check flow, not photos. A river stretch that is a calm pool at low flow is a chute after rain. The USGS national water dashboard publishes live streamflow, gage height, and water temperature from gauges nationwide.
- Wait 24 to 48 hours after heavy rain. Runoff raises current, pushes new submerged trees into familiar pools, and spikes bacteria counts.
- Respect cold water even on hot days. The National Weather Service notes that cold shock can be as severe at 50-60°F as at 35°F, and the involuntary gasp reflex can trigger in water as warm as 77°F. Enter slowly rather than jumping.
- Look at the surface before you swim. The CDC describes harmful algal blooms as foam, scum, mats, or spilled paint — often bright green. Discolored or foul-smelling water means stay out, and keep dogs out especially.
- Keep water out of your nose in warm, still freshwater. Naegleria fowleri infections are very rare but almost always fatal, and the CDC's advice is to hold your nose or wear a nose clip when jumping in, and to keep your head above water in hot springs.

Sources we check
- CDC — Harmful Algal Blooms — What cyanobacteria blooms look like and why warm, slow, nutrient-rich water grows them.
- National Weather Service — Cold Water Safety — Cold shock is as dangerous at 50-60°F as at 35°F, and the gasp reflex can trigger in water as warm as 77°F.
- CDC — Naegleria fowleri — Rare but almost always fatal; it enters through the nose in warm freshwater, so use a nose clip when jumping.
- USGS — National Water Dashboard — Live streamflow, gage height, and water temperature from gauges nationwide.
